Bear in the Big Blue House, the puppet-based children’s show that aired on Playhouse Disney from 1997 to 2006, is on Disney+ as of October 19. Throughout the episode, the theme (ex; "sleep", "doctors", "Thanksgiving") is learned about, and a lesson is learned at the end of the episode. Bear acts as a caregiver towards Ojo the bear cub, Treelo the lemur, Tutter the mouse, and Pip and Pop, who are two otters. Character "Shadow" narrates a segment with shadow puppets in each episode. Season 4 (2002–
One housemate is the shadow of a girl separated from her body (which sounds like a Julio Torres bit on Los Espookys). Her segments deviate from the Jim Henson house style and use shadow-puppetry in the vein of Lotte Reiniger — if Lotte Reiniger ever made a short film about pooping in a toilet. Bear has been immortalized as a balloon appearing in at least three different parades and has been produced in plush form and other merchandise. He also made an appearance in the "We Are Family" music video alongside Big Bird, Barney, and characters from Between the Lions. Sometimes, at the opening of the program, Bear will have a talk with Ray. In the fourth season of the program, Woodland Valley, the community at large, is featured much more heavily.
He has a strong sense of smell and loves to sniff things, but he enjoys his other four senses as well. Bear oversees everyone at the Big Blue House, a sort of combination daycare/group-home. Bear has a warm, caring personality somewhat similar in style to Fred Rogers and a well-ranged singing voice. A change of his appearance in the fourth season (or occasionally seen) is pointy eyes rather than circular ones. There’s another blue-centric show for preschoolers now streaming, and it’s a ’90s gem.
After the hiatus and the spin-off Breakfast with Bear, a final run of new episodes aired on the Disney Channel in April 2006, with the last episode airing on April 28, 2006. Repeats of the show ceased altogether in May 2007 (December 2010 in the UK). Thigpen was posthumously nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for voicing Luna.
